Why this page exists

Composite vs wood at a glance

Compare baseline platform allowances, upkeep and what to verify before choosing a material.

Sell the upgrade with a render

Many homeowners default to wood because they can’t picture composite on their own house. A render on their own photo makes the comparison concrete.

Brand-level pricing

Trex Enhance vs Trex Transcend vs TimberTech AZEK: the spread is real and worth understanding before you choose.

Total cost of ownership

Compare the initial quote with your own cleaning, finishing and repair budget. There is no universal break-even year.

How it works

  1. Show us your space. Upload a clear backyard photo. Tell us where the deck should go and what you want to change.
  2. Check your brief. Review your photo and choices, then buy your Deck Ideas Pack for US$19. No subscription.
  3. Compare and refine. Explore three concepts. Use your two remaining refinements to develop a favorite.
  4. Take the next step. Download clean images and compare before and after. Share your ideas with family or a builder.

Composite Deck Cost in 2026

Composite and PVC are different material classes. These are PaperPlan editorial U.S. platform allowances in USD, not manufacturer prices for named collections. The supplier sources below help you check material costs separately from local labor and project extras.

MaterialInstalled priceLifespanMaintenanceHeatLook
Pressure-treated pine$25 – $40 / sq ftDepends on treatment, detailing and careClean and refinish as neededTest a sample in site conditionsNatural wood with variation and weathering
Composite$45 – $70 / sq ftCheck the specific collection warrantyFollow manufacturer care guidance; no routine stainingColor and product affect surface temperatureWood-look colors and grain vary by collection
PVC$60 – $90 / sq ftCheck the specific collection warrantyFollow manufacturer care guidanceVerify claims for the specific product and colorPolymer boards with collection-specific finishes

The model’s composite rates are $20–$30 per square foot above the corresponding wood rates. That is a comparison of editorial assumptions, not a promised upgrade price or payback. Use itemized local quotes and your expected maintenance costs for an ownership comparison.

Cost assumptions and sources

U.S. planning allowances in USD for a simple, single-level deck, including ordinary materials and contractor labor. These are PaperPlan editorial assumptions, not surveyed averages or a local quote.

  • Pressure-treated: $25 – $40 / sq ft installed (USD)
  • Composite: $45 – $70 / sq ft installed (USD)
  • PVC: $60 – $90 / sq ft installed (USD)

Multiply deck area (width × length in feet) by the selected installed rate, then round each end of the range to the nearest $100.

Demolition, permits and engineering, taxes, stairs, railing, roofs, unusual foundations and difficult site access need separate quotes. Location, product selection and labor can put a real bid outside these ranges. Canadian projects need local CAD pricing.

The manufacturer sources below explain scope and cost drivers; they do not validate PaperPlan’s exact installed-rate bands. Supplier material estimates should not be compared directly with an installed project budget.

Common questions

Is composite decking worth the extra cost?

It depends on the installed quote, expected upkeep and how long you will use the deck. Composite can reduce finishing work, but this calculator does not estimate resale value or guarantee that maintenance savings repay the upgrade.

How much does Trex cost per square foot?

Use the linked Trex material calculator for the selected collection, dimensions and options, then get a local labor quote. Our $45–$70 per square foot composite band is a broad editorial platform allowance in USD, not a Trex price list.

Does composite get hot in the sun?

Decking can get hot in direct sun. Color, product and site conditions matter; a rendering cannot measure surface temperature. Check manufacturer test conditions and try physical samples at the site.

Can I show the upgrade visually?

Yes. PaperPlan renders the same backyard in pressure-treated, Trex Enhance, Trex Transcend, and AZEK PVC, same photo, side by side. Seeing both on the real house usually settles it.
